From Doreen Usher on 10/01/2006

My daughter Denise blessed me with my first grand-daughter on Saturday 26th of Novemeber 1988, her weight was 7lb 10oz. I remember it as if it were yesterday, when Ray rang and said 'Doreen we have a little girl'. Her brother Gary and his wife Alison walked though the door and couldn't believe it. We all went through to Ashington hospital to see Penny. She was another Denise to look at, absolutely gorgeous. We were all so happy, Penny was loved and cherished from day one. Penny's Dad Ray who was in the Army at the time came home on leave to be with Denise for Pennys' birth. Penny was christened at St.Nicholas church on Sunday January 22nd 1989. Denise, Penny and Ray all left for Germany where Ray was stationed with the Army on the 18th of February and I couldnt wait til they returned to see them all again. I went in May of that year for 3 weeks to stay with them. We filled our days walking in the sunshine when Ray was working. The happiness that Penny brought into our lives was unbelievable she was simply the sweetest child you could ever have the pleasure of meeting. Her Grand-dad Ernie Usher a talented joiner and bricklayer and would make Penny rabbit hutches for Bugsy her rabbit, ironing boards, sledges and a small path for her to toddle onto the lawn. Being his first grandchild she was the apple of his eye. Penny started Kramel First School then went onto Southlands Middle School. Cramlington High School followed when she was of age to attend. Penny was quiet and polite, she was a star. Penny left an impression on everyone she met, they all loved her but not half as much as I did her Nana Doreen. I remember being on holiday in Cyprus and Penny trying to teach me how to swim in the sea; what a laugh that was...Every memory I had of Penny is a happy joyous one. In May 2005 Penny became ill and was thought to have contracted Mumps. Denise rang me and told me that Penny was coming out in bruises. Tests were carried out and the hospital confirmed that she hadn't contracted Mumps but was diagnosed with Leukemia. She was then admitted to the R.V.I cancer ward. This went on for 6 months. Penny was never left for second on her own, her parents, Ray and Denise took it in turn living in the hospital with Penny. Penny never once complained. When asked how she felt she'd always reply 'I'm fine'. So much so the Nurses called us 'The Fine Family'. The worse day of all our lives occured on Friday the 9th of December 2005 when our shining light left us. But Love never dies my Bairn, we will meet again Penny my love. I believe that.
